April 2018 Monthly Review +$4,020.00
April saw me hit my highest profit level for year 8, before quickly going back down. The first half of the month saw massive gains and on the 14th of April, I was sitting on close to $30,000 profit for the month. 10 days later after some massive AFL losses, I was on -$5,000 for the month. Thanks to the NRL I managed to end the month with a decent profit of $4,000.
In total, April saw turnover of $271,970.00 for a profit of $4,020.00 at 1.48% ROI.
I placed 147 bets over the month and won 71, and lost 75 with 1 refunded.
The biggest bet that lost in April was an $8,500 bet on St. Kilda with a 28.5 point start. Alongside the Line bet, there was also a $3,000 bet on the H2H as well. They lost that game 103-56 and never looked like covering the line. The NRL also had some big bets lose. This included 2 big bets in a row going down. I had $6,000 on Manly over Parramatta (10-44) @ $1.70 and $5,500 on Penrith over Cronulla (22-26) @ $1.70. The biggest winning bets on the NRL included a $6,000 bet on New Zealand over North Queensland (22-12) @ $1.86 and an $8,000 bet on Canberra over Paramatta (18-2) @ $1.62, while the AFL saw a $7,500 bet on Collingwood -2.5 @ $1.93 and $4,500 on the H2H (101-52) @ $1.75 and a $6,500 bet on Hawthorn +9.5 @ $1.93 and $3,500 on the H2H (118-117) @ $2.40
AFL
The AFL H2H bets saw turnover of $45,250.00 and a profit of $2,630.00 at 5.8% ROI. I placed 23 bets and won 12 of them. The Line bets hit 41.7% with 10 winners from 24 bets. I turned over $89,060.00 and lost $11,810.00 for a -13.3% ROI.
NRL
NRL turned over $65,890.00 on the H2H bets for a profit of $10,730.00 at 16.3% ROI, I also turned over $12,770.00 on Totals and made a profit of $2,090.00 at 16.4%.
NBA
I placed 65 NBA Totals bets in March and won 32 of them. I turned over $59,000.00 and made $380.00 at 0.6% ROI. April saw the end of the regular season and we are down to the playoffs in May.
Another rollercoaster month, and one where I thought we had hit our stride. May will be my last betting month in year 8 as I leave for the World Cup in early June and won’t return until mid-July. It’s highly unlikely I’ll be betting during this time.

Why don’t you implement stop-losses and/or take-profits to manage the ebb and flow? I know you’re playing the statistical game but wouldn’t it make sense to cash in when the going is good and out when you’re on a bad run? Or do you place all bets at the start of the month and ride it out no matter what? Very interesting blog!

The issue is that a bettor will never know when the good run is going to come to an end or when the bad run will turn.
Most of my profit comes over very short periods of time (I just have no idea when they are). So I could be treading water for 6 months and then make $100k in the next month.
The variance comes with the territory and most people can’t handle it (and why they end up losing long-term).
